Since 1998 John Lydon has been the face of country life butter here in the UK. I saw a few signs here and there but did not really recognise him. Or, rather, I was in denial. I’m sort of scratching my head about this. I should not have looked it up and lived in oblivion. [...]

Nottingham Tourism: DH Lawrence as a teenager, with a horrible job
Posted in Nottingham Tourism, Signs on August 26, 2011 | Leave a Comment »
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of plaques around the city commemorating one historical event or another. One that I noticed about two months ago is this: Apparently, author of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” among other works, D H Lawrence grew up in Nottingham. Upon completion of high school at Nottingham (Boys) High School, he found [...]

I walk by this sign regularly. And, about 150 yards later, I turn right. Elderly people, Leicester (Sigh.)

Signs: Lord Byron, Poet, Nottingham local

Only a few hundred meters from our home is a building where Lord Byron, the poet, resided for a short while here in Nottingham. Now, he may have been a Lord, but, like most poets–he had some serious debts. I’m not completely clear on how ‘poor’ he was. But, the other sign outside of his [...]
Signs: Segregating Irish-Americans from the Irish

(Click on photograph to see it in full splendor.) Dear Irish-Americans, you cannot come back to the UK and think you can just mingle with the Irish. You have separate pubs to go to! I do love the replica of the Statue of Liberty above the door to the Irish American pub.
Signs: Poor zebra

For my American friends, a Zebra Crossing is a path in which oncoming traffic must stop for crossing pedestrians. For my British friends, I’m really sorry but everytime I see a street that is labelled as having “humps,” I laugh. But, then there was this poor zebra… and I was amused to no end.
Ameri-type: Amish beds made in the UK

Found in Hopewell’s Furniture store on Nottingham’s Huntingdon Street: Since having spent my University days nearby the Pennsylvania Dutch region, I have been on the look out for Amish references. I especially like the idea that the Amish, a group committed to living sans-frills, may very well be sleeping on Tempur-Pedic mattresses. Tourists to the [...]
Signs: a regular lift in my day…

In our new building, we have an elevator. Or, shall I say it in British English, a “lift”? Or, more formally, it is “Schindler’s Lift.” Now more than a month here, this still makes me giggle. There’s another sign that says to call Schindler’s Lift Services in case of emergency. But, I can’t get a [...]
Ameri-type: Southern Fried Chicken

I am extremely appreciative that SFC keeps halal. I sincerely doubt that most Southern US fried chicken joints are sensitive to Muslim clientele and corresponding dietary needs.
